After the unsuccessful demise of E-Post Brief and De-Mail, previous failed attempts to boost decision makers’ profiles, German internet providers have decided to collaborate on the launch of “e-mail made in Germany”.

Riding the wave of public uproar caused by the NSA phishing of German data, IP power houses such as 1&1 and German Telecom now want to take on the German e-mail market in a combined effort to utilise power and profits. This may look both promising and useful, it has already been exposed however in a public statement by the Chaos Computer Club, as almost useless.

    1. In two press releases the chaos computer club criticizes the incorrect and insufficient encoding of email in Germany as being predominantly “advertising efficient”..
    2. E-Mail providers Posteo, and the trade publisher Heise Online also criticise, that the inter mail provider Trust procedure, with which servers in the ‚email made in Germany‘ network mutually authenticate each other is obscure and that it creates an artificial seal-off. With DANE, an open standard would have been available as an alternative since August 2012, with which the trustworthiness of the communication partners and the integrity of the encoding could have been maintained. Looking at DANE the question arises, if certification costs wouldn’t place an unnecessarily hurdle on providers wishing to join the network.
    3. The email provider indicated on his web page, that in theory the initiative can accept all providers, while „in reality the participation of other providers is systematically prevented“. Since several months the application has been ignored and the question arises if „’Email made in Germany’ wouldn’t be much more than a marketing bubble.
    4. In addition it is not safe to say, that the participating providers would nevertheless publish the data communication or individual messages on demand of authorities or on obligation by a court ruling.

    What to expect from a country with a sole appetite for e-commerce solutions and an otherwise broken knowledge transfer pipeline, ill capable of sharing innovation? Should the initiative succeed, the first thing these guys would do, is reverse the process for businesses, that invested in transforming paper based correspondence to digital communications by introducing fees to continuously be increased.




    The use of search, e-mail, communications… is of greater value to the people than the renouncement of data phishing. Appeals of German politicians and data-security commissioners to please omit Google, Facebook, WhatsApp… are useless.
