We don’t know how many turkey there were at the time of the first American Thanksgiving…
But Thomas Morton, the founder of the colony of Merrymount, was told by Indians that there were thousands living in the forests around New England.
We do know that by 1900,  wild turkeys were in serious decline, with only 30,000 estimated left in the whole USA.Now there are seven million.
